Carbon dioxide emissions in Belgium 2000-2019

The level of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Belgium decreased from 2000 to 2019. However, this decrease was rather unstable during this period. For instance, the level of emissions peaked in 2003 with 144 million metric tons of CO2 and reached as low as 114 million metric tons in 2014. Nonetheless, in 2019, the emissions of CO2 roughly amounted to 124.5 million metric tons in Belgium.

CO2 emissions in Belgium

Carbon dioxide is one of the main gases responsible for greenhouse emissions, its lifetime in the atmosphere is around 100 years. In Belgium energy-related CO2 emissions were projected to decrease in 2020, only to increase again in the following decades. However, compared to the Netherlands and Luxemburg, the emissions per capita were relatively modest. In 2017, CO2 emissions per capita were estimated to have reached 8.8 total measured CO2 (TCO2) per person in Belgium, whereas the Netherlands reached 9.6 TCO2 and Luxemburg 16 TCO2.

Greenhouse gas

Greenhouse gas plays a significant role in global warming, yet the level of CO2 in the atmosphere is regularly rising under the influence of mankind. Indeed, an important part of carbon dioxide emissions come from the combustion of fossil fuels but also from agriculture. In 2014, the annual greenhouse gas emissions from fuel combustion in the manufacturing and construction industries in Belgium amounted to 13.29 million tones. According to a 2019 survey, emissions were an important environmental issue for 10 percent of Belgian respondents. Meanwhile, 40 percent of respondents thought global warming was an important issue.

Supplementary notes

According to the source, the carbon emissions in this statistic reflect only those through consumption of oil, gas and coal, and are based on standard global average conversion factors. This does not allow for any carbon that is sequestered, for other sources of carbon emissions, or for emissions of other greenhouse gases.
Data prior to 2007 was taken from the BP Statistical Review data worksheet
