Egg imports to Germany have been fluctuating in recent years. After a peak in 2010 of almost 8.3 billion, numbers have been dwindling, with just under 6.4 billion eggs imported in 2018.

A good egg

The numbers presented in this statistic are connected to various reasons, some of them being that Germany has its own established agricultural industry and therefore provides eggs domestically, as well as the fact that importing eggs is more difficult than transporting them within the country. Germany does also export eggs, where changing volumes have been recorded as well. Most recent figures saw egg exports amounting to almost 2.1 billion eggs in 2017.

Rising consumption

Per capita egg consumption has generally been rising in Germany, which may be due to it becoming an increasingly popular breakfast food as well as a snack during the day. In terms of organic certification, however, eggs have some catching up to do, compared to other food products.
