UK egg industry - statistics & facts

Eggs are a popular food item as they are inexpensive, high in protein, and are versatile in many dishes. Over 86 million metric tons of eggs were produced worldwide in 2020 alone. That year, China was the leading producer of eggs in the world, accounting for more just about 600 billion eggs.

Egg production in the UK

The value of egg production in the United Kingdom is increasing, and in 2020 alone, egg production in the UK was valued at 730 million British pounds. While egg production has increased, the production of liquid egg products has decreased in recent years. In 2020, liquid egg production reached an all-time low in the UK. Annual output value of eggs in Northern Ireland increased over the time period from 52.6 million British pounds in 2010 to about 115 million British pounds in 2019.

Egg trade & retail

The sales volume of egg products manufactured in the United Kingdom has generally increased in recent years. This volume reached a ten year high in 2018, where it accounted for more than 44 thousand metric tons in sales. Additionally, the value of UK egg exports has significantly increased, as they have doubled in the last ten years, aside from a slight decrease in 2020. Egg product export volumes in the UK also increased significantly in 2019 and 2020, reaching a high of 205 thousand cases of eggs.

Organic and free-range eggs

In the UK, there exists four ways of egg farming: organic, free-range, barn, and caged. As consumers become more aware of animal welfare and sustainability, they express their views through their purchasing power. In 2021, free-range eggs were the most packed egg type in the UK. In addition to this, number of organic eggs in the UK increased significantly in recent years. In 2021, 1.17 million cases of organic eggs were packed in the United Kingdom.
