As of May 2023, Mount Everest was the highest mountain above sea level at 8,848 meters. The mountain is located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas on the China-Nepal border. Meanwhile, the second highest mountain was K2, less commonly known as Mount Godwin-Austen, which is located in the Karakoram range in both China and Pakistan, the mountain's peak was recorded at 8,611 meters above sea level.
