Population of Sweden 2018, by county The population in Sweden reached 10.23 million in 2018. Around half of these reside in the counties Stockholm, Västra Götaland or Skåne, the three counties where the three largest cities in Sweden are also located. Stockholm county is the capital region with around 2.3 million inhabitants. Västra Götaland county, where the second largest city Göteborg is located, had around 1.7 million inhabitants, and Skåne county, the most southern region where the third largest city Malmö is, had around 1.4 million inhabitants.
The highest population density

      Stockholm, Skåne and Västra Götaland were also the three counties in Sweden with the highest population density, where Stockholm county by far had the highest. In 2018, 359.9 inhabitants per square kilometer lived in Stockholm county, while 124.2 per square kilometer lived in Skåne and 71.8 per square kilometer in Västra Götaland.  

The highest rents

      The county in Sweden with the highest rents for rented dwellings was not surprisingly Stockholm county, the county with the largest population and the highest population density. In 2018, the average annual rent per square meter in Stockholm county amounted to 1,255 Swedish kronor.
