Migration flow of Sweden 2008-2018

Migration flow of Sweden from 2008 to 2018

Migration flow of Sweden 2008-2018 Sweden has experienced a positive migration flow for several years. Many individuals are migrating to Sweden every year, and fewer individuals are emigrating. Almost 86 thousand more individuals were immigrating than emigrating in 2018. This has been a major contributing factor for population growth, despite a low and declining fertility rate.
The immigrants

A large group of immigrants were Swedes who once left their home country to settle in another country for at least 12 months, and then returned. This group of immigrants who returned in 2018 was the second largest immigrant group (after Syrians who composed the largest group) and consisted of almost 13 thousand returning Swedes.

The emigrants

In order to understand this statistic, it is necessary to notice that the Swedish statistics of emigrants include everyone, regardless of citizenship, who has lived in Sweden for more than 12 months. Most emigrants from Sweden leave for the Nordic countries, especially for Denmark and Norway. A large group of individuals who emigrated from Sweden, were born abroad, immigrated to Sweden and lived there for at least 12 months, before returning to their countries of birth.
