The highest number of immigrants in Sweden that year were Syrians (51,540 people). The second biggest non-Swedish immigrant group were Eritreans (6,580) and thereafter Poland with 5,078 people. Syrian Arab Republic was also first on the list of countries which citizens applied for asylum in Sweden in 2016. That year, 2,803 male Syrians and 2,656 female Syrians applied for asylum in Sweden. Immigration in Sweden has been growing in the recent years. In 2016, a total of 163,005 people have immigrated to Sweden. The largest immigrant age group were people aged from 25 to 34 years (45,756 in 2016).
