Number of drug-related crimes in Sweden 2008-2018 The number of drug-related crimes in Sweden decreased from 2013 to 2016, when they amounted to almost 91 thousand. The number of crimes started to increase again in 2017 and 2018. The highest number of drug-related crimes during the period was in 2018, reaching around 106.5 thousand crimes. Most of these crimes were possession for private usage, followed by possession of drugs as the second most common crime.
Cannabis use is the most common drug use

     The most commonly used drug in Sweden is cannabis. In a survey from 2017 on cannabis use, 12.3 percent of men and 9.3 percent of women in the age group between 17- and 29-years old stated that they had used cannabis within the last twelve months.

Drug-related deaths

     A serious side-effect from illegal drug use are the drug-related deaths. The number of drug-related deaths in Sweden was higher during the last four years of the period from 2007 to 2017. The highest number of deaths occurred in 2014 and amounted to 11.8 per hundred thousand inhabitants. Most cases of drug-related deaths were due to overdoses from opioid use.
