Health employment in the country
The number of personnel working in the health sector in Luxembourg has increased while the number of hospitals has decreased. The number of employees in the health and social care industry in Luxembourg has more than doubled in the period 2000 to 2018. Since 2000, the number of physicians has increased year-on-year, going from 938 in 2000 to 1,780 in 2017.
Expenditure in the health sector
In 2019, Luxembourg spent 5.4 percent of its GDP on health. Since 2009, the share of GDP spent on healthcare has decreased in the country. Luxembourg had one of the lowest spending on healthcare in Europe in 2020. Luxembourg only had a greater spending on health as share of GDP than Turkey in 2020.
