Health expenditures in China 2008-2018

In 2018, the health expenditures in China has reached a historical peak of over 5.9 trillion yuan.

Health expenditures worldwide

The health expenditure in China has soared from under 500 billion yuan in 2000 to over five trillion in 2017. The potential reasons behind this growth are multifold. First of all, the increase in population in China surely contributed to such a massive growth. In terms of relative numbers, health expenditure as a proportion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) had also been increasing in general in the last two decades and have reached over six percent in the last two years, indicating the growing importance the government was putting on the healthcare in the country. Although this is still a relatively low share of GDP when compared to other more developed countries, for example Australia or South Korea.

Health care in China

The same phenomenon was reflected in the increase in per capita health expenditure of Chinese households as well, which has doubled since 2010 for Beijing, as the region with the highest health expenditure in China. Health insurance is voluntary in China, but the share of population having purchased this has also grown quickly in the last ten years, where the number of health insurance premium payers in urban China has surpassed one billion for the first time in 2017, where a significant share of amount of payers worked as executives or professionals.
