The number of workers in hospitals in Portugal has generally increased since 2000, reaching 130.5 thousand in 2017. While the number of general practitioners in Portugal has increased by almost 75 percent between 2000 and 2017.

Expenditure in the health sector 

Portugal’s expenditure on healthcare was nine percent of its’ GDP in 2017. This share has remained fairly stable around the nine percent mark since the early 2000s. In comparison to other European countries Portugal’s expenditure on health is fairly average. Switzerland had the highest share of expenditure on health, spending 12.2 percent of its GDP in this year.
