In Portugal, as of 2022, there were 16,471 voluntary interruptions of pregnancy. Women aged between 20 and 24 years old had the highest number of abortions, namely over four thousand, followed by women aged between 25 and 29 years old. Personal choice was the principal reason to have an abortion, with serious illnesses or congenital malformations of the unborn child being more prevalent for women with 35 to 39 years of age.
