Age distribution of the population in Italy 2019, by macro-region

In January 2019, the North-West of Italy had the oldest population, with 24 percent of the population being aged 65 years and older. By contrast, people living in the Southern regions of the country were the youngest nationwide. Indeed, the birth rate stood at 7.6 births per 1,000 inhabitants in South Italy, the macro-region with the largest rate.
