Carbon dioxide emissions India 2001-2016

India's emissions had increased from 1.1 metric tons of carbon dioxide per capita in 2001 to 1.8 metric tons in 2016. CO2, the main contributor to climate change, is mainly emitted through the burning of fossil fuels. The south Asian country is one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide after China and the United States.

Greenhouse gases

Among the various economic sectors of the country, the energy sector accounted for the highest share of greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide absorb infrared radiation and trap heat and keep the earth’s surface warm. The abundance of such gases in the atmosphere accelerates global warming. This phenomenon, much like the glass of a greenhouse for plants, needs optimum temperature for survival. However, with the industrial revolution and modern anthropological activities, the levels of these gases exceed in the atmosphere causing excessive heating.

Emission per capita income

As of 2013, the northeastern state of Nagaland (largely agrarian) had the lowest emission intensity, while Chhattisgarh (heavily industrialized) the highest. The emission per capita income informs the level of greenhouse gas emissions for every unit of economic activity based on the state gross domestic product.
