Highest-grossing movies South Korea 2022

The highest-grossing movie in South Korean cinemas in 2022 was 'The Roundup', posting a revenue of around 131.3 billion South Korean won. The movie was also the most viewed domestic film in South Korean cinemas that year.

 Cinemas and COVID-19

While 2019 had brought quite a few records, such as a high number of ticket sales or box office revenue, COVID-19 brought the industry to a halt in 2020. While box office revenue amounted to almost two trillion South Korean won in 2019, it did not reach even half of the amount the following year, with only some minor recovery in 2021. Due to regulations on social distancing and the temporary halt of various cultural activities only having been lifted recently, both box office revenue and the number of cinema admissions have not yet fully recovered.

 Movie preferences among Koreans 

In terms of domestic movies, 'Extreme Job' remains the highest-grossing domestic movie as of December 2022. Meanwhile 'The Roundup,' released in May of 2022, is already among the top three highest-grossing domestic films. Regarding foreign movies, films distributed by Disney are the most popular among Koreans. The list of highest-grossing foreign movies includes mostly Disney films such as 'Avatar', 'Avengers: Endgame', and 'Frozen 2'.
