A new sign convention has been adopted in Hong Kong for the financial account since June 2023. From then on, an increase in assets/liabilities is indicated by a positive value. Note that an increase in assets indicates a net financial outflow, while an increase in liabilities indicates a net financial inflow. Therefore, an increase in the financial account balance (i.e. when assets minus liabilities is a positive value) indicates a net financial outflow.
