This statistic displays the number of central jails across India in 2015, broken down by state and union territory. In that year, Madhya Pradesh had the highest number of central jails, amounting to eleven while there were eight central jails in the national capital of Delhi.
Prisoners sentenced to a long period (more than 2 years) of imprisonment are confined in central jails, which have larger capacity in comparison to other jails. These jails also have rehabilitation facilities.
