India - underweight adult men by region 2016

This statistic presents the results of a survey among households across rural and urban India about the share of undernourished adult men in 2016. In urban households, the share of undernourished men was lower with 15.3 percent, while in rural areas, it was almost 23 percent. This was a decrease from 2005-06, when the total share of malnourished adult men was about 34.2 percent.

*According to the source, these are men between 15 and 49 years old whose BMI was below normal (less than 18.5 kilograms per meter square).
Body mass index is body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is universally expressed in units of kilograms per meter square. Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.
