Grocery sales of S Group in Finland 2023, by chain
The largest Finnish retail chain S Group generated over 11.07 billion euros in grocery sales in 2023. The supermarket chain S-market reached around 5.3 billion euros in sales, and Prisma hypermarkets over 4.1 billion euros.
The S Group is a Finnish retailing co-operative headquartered in Helsinki. The group consists of independent regional cooperatives and SOK Corporation, which is owned by the cooperatives, and its subsidiaries. Grocery stores belonging to the S Group include hypermarkets, larger supermarkets and smaller local supermarkets located in residential areas of larger cities or at service stations.
S Group in numbers
The market share of the S Group in Finland was roughly 47 percent in 2022, over ten percent higher than the share of the main competitor K Group. S Group’s market share has declined by one percent between 2016 and 2019, while the K Group and Lidl slightly increased their shares of the Finnish grocery retail space. S Group operated 1,073 grocery stores in 2022. There were 74 Prisma hypermarkets, 452 S-markets, 457 Alepa and Sale stores. Supermarkets generated roughly 9.7 billion euros of the S Group’s total revenue of 13.5 billion euros. Finland is the main market of the S Group, but it also operates in the Baltics.
Second largest player: K Group
The K Group, also known as Kesko, operates in the grocery, specialty goods, car, as well as building and technical trade. Grocery trade is K Group’s most important business area, which generated roughly 6.1 billion of the K-group’s total revenue of 11.8 billion euros in 2022. The K Group consists of more than 1,800 stores located in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Poland. At the end of the year 2022, the retailing cooperative had 1,220 K-food stores, including 81 K-Citymarket hypermarkets and smaller K-Market stores.
