Italy is a country with big regional differences in terms of living costs and goods prices. In 2013, the reported average price for an espresso coffee was between 1.04 euros in Ferrara and 0.77 euros in Reggio Calabria. Two cities in North and South of the country had different price values for such popular hot drink. This regional variation can be reported also for other food categories. For instance, in 2016, a vegan or vegetarian restaurant meal cost approximately 12 euros in Naples and more than 44 in Milan.

Regional differences

Aside from consumer goods, significant prices gaps were observed in durable goods like in the used cars’ market. In 2017, a secondhand car would cost on average 9,950 euros in Calabria and more than 14 thousand euros in Veneto. Within the described range, prices varied in the other twenty Italian regions, as well. In the central region of Lazio, the reported price was about 12 thousand euros.

Household spending

Across the country, different living costs reflect on household spending. In 2017, a family living in Sicily would spend about 67 euros a month for cultural activities, while a family living in Trentino-South Tyrol would spend about 191 euros on the same recreation services.
