Coffee is the largest segment in the hot beverage market. The coffee industry creates many trends, which means that the popularity among consumers is constantly increasing and the market is growing. There is a wide variety of coffee-based beverages on offer, and the options are constantly being expanded.

In 2021, the coffee market in the United States generated a revenue of over 81 billion U.S. dollars, of which roasted coffee made up the largest share. That year, the revenue of roasted coffee amounted to almost 67 billion U.S. dollars. The average American spent 200 U.S. dollars on roasted coffee. In comparison, instant coffee achieved only an average revenue of almost 44 U.S. dollars per person. When it comes to which brand of coffee Americans prefer to drink, Starbucks was chosen by nearly 40 percent of respondents from a 2022 survey as their favorite coffee brand. It was followed by Folgers and Dunkin’.

Which type of coffee roast is the most popular?

In 2022, a survey revealed that medium roast was the favorite coffee roast among American consumers. Just under half of the survey respondents reported having a preference for medium roast. By comparison, only roughly 12 percent of consumers preferred light roast. The same survey also found that about 17 percent drink decaf between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Decaffeinated coffee is not entirely caffeine-free, but it only contains about two milligrams per cup, which is significantly less than regular caffeinated coffee. In addition to the consumption of normal coffee, other coffee-based drinks or dishes were also very popular in the United States. Coffee cake, coffee ice cream or Irish coffee were the top three choices amongst Americans.

Do consumers in the U.S. drink coffee every day?

The majority of American consumers drink coffee every day. In fact, about 74 percent reported drinking coffee every day, and only almost nine percent of consumers reported drinking coffee sometimes. Recently, another survey found that Gen Z (born in 2000 or later) mostly don't drink coffee at all. For the other generations (Millennials, Gen X, Baby Boomers, and Silent Generation), it became clear that most of them drink 1 to 2 cups of coffee a day.
