Spain’s stock of electric vehicles has experienced a significant growth in the past years. While in 2015 the Spanish electric fleet stood at slightly under seven thousand, the Mediterranean country clocked up almost 54 thousand units of this type of vehicle by 2019, the vast majority of them being passenger cars. With billions using vehicles around the world for their commutes, increasing the number of electric cars would help limit the CO2 emissions to the atmosphere to ultimately curb global warming.
Europe – paving the road for a new era
Despite the great increase in the use of electric vehicles in Spain, the share of electric passenger cars sold relative to fuel-powered vehicles is almost negligible, at 0.5 percent of all passenger car sales in 2018. In this regard, Norway topped the list of new battery-powered cars with over 30 percent of passenger car sales in the country, followed by a large margin by the Netherlands at 5.4 percent of car sales. Europe is preparing its infrastructure to accommodate the new transportation trends, with over 170 thousand electric vehicle charging stations across the continent in 2019, up from only 3.2 thousand in 2010.
The electric car global race
China and the United States lead the race of electric car manufacture in the world, with predictions pointing to production volumes of approximately seven million units and three million units respectively by 2021. Germany, Europe’s indisputable car manufacturer, ranks as the leading producer of plug-in cars on the Old Continent with a projected volume of approximately 2.5 million cars during that same year. Also, German cars appear on the list of most expensive passenger cars based on the most recent data.
