Market capitalization of UniCredit on Milan Stock Exchange 2017-2023

The market capitalization of the Italian banking Group UniCredit decreased considerably from just over 37 billion euros in July 2017 to just above 21 billion euros as of September 2022. After Septmber 2022, however, the market cap of UniCredit increased sharply and reached a value of 37.6 billion euros in February 2023. The bank ranked among the top 15 in a list of the leading banks in Europe in terms of market capitalization as of December 2022. UniCredit’s direct competitor in Italy, Intesa Sanpaolo, ranked fifth in the same ranking with a market capitalization of 52.5 billion euros.

Two banks dominate the Italian market

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit are the leading banks in Italy. As of February 2022, the two banking groups dominated a ranking of Italian banks in terms of market capitalization, with the rest of the banks lagging far behind on the Stock Exchange. Moreover, Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit were also the banks with the highest number of branches and employed the largest number of people.

UniCredit and Facebook

Facebook has become an important communication tool not only for people, but also for companies and in this case banks. As a matter of fact, the social network is at the center of the digital, social and communication strategy of many players in very diverse sectors. The banking sector is no exception. As of March 2019, UniCredit Italia was the bank with the largest number of likes on Facebook in Italy. However, in a very controversial move, the CEO of the banking Group headquartered in Milan announced that the bank would not be present on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram starting June 2019. According to the bank’s announcement, the move was due to concerns regarding privacy and the nature of the information handled by the bank.
