Government intervention on fake news in the U.S. 2018-2021
A 2021 survey held in the United States found that 48 percent of adults believed the U.S. government should take steps to restrict false information online, even if this meant limiting freedom of information. Attitudes to bodies and organizations outside the news industry helping to stem the spread of false information have changed since 2018, with more Americans participating in the 2021 survey willing to see tech companies and governments intervene than the share who said the same three years earlier.
