Leading Turkish banks 2021 by total assets

In 2021, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Ziraat Bankası A.Ş., also known as Ziraat Bankasi, had the highest value of total assets in Turkey. The state-owned bank saw total assets reach more than 102.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2021, approximately 27 billion more than the second largest bank. Turkey’s largest banks fall far short as compared to the size of Europe’s largest banks. The total value of assets of the banking sector in Turkey amounted to more than six trillion Turkish lira in 2020.

Turkish banking sector

The Turkish banking sector is made up of a total of 53 banks (April 2019), the majority of which are either foreign owned or development and investment banks. In the third quarter of 2020, there were over one billion credit card transactions, and roughly 830 million debit card transactions in 2019.

Non-performing loans

Non-performing loans are those that are in default or are close to being in default. Many standard contract terms specify that loans become non-performing after being in default for 90 days, but this can vary. As of 2017 the ratio of non-performing loans (NLP) to total gross loans in Turkey decreased once again to 2.84 percent. In 2017, Yapı ve Kredi Bankası A.Ş., one of Turkey’s largest banks had to write off over 1.6 billion Turkish lira in loans.
