In April 2023, Assam produced the highest volume of tea in India compared to other states. West Bengal ranked second that year with an estimated production volume of nearly 24 million kilograms.

Types of tea produced in India

India produces two main types of tea: Orthodox and Crush, Tear and Curl (CTC) tea. Orthodox tea, which is processed using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations, is predominantly produced in Assam. On the other hand, CTC tea is characterized by its unique processing method where the leaves are crushed, torn, and curled, resulting in small, hard pellets. This method is designed for mass production and caters to the taste preferences of a large population.

India plays a significant role in the global tea industry, contributing a substantial portion to the world’s total tea production. Even as one of the largest tea consumers globally, India maintains robust export. With a steady rise in the country’s tea exports, the United Arab Emirates and Russia are its key destinations. Consequently, Indian tea effectively meets both local and global demand.
