Bounce rate is an SEO ("search engine optimization") metric that measures how many consumers leave a particular website without clicking on anything. In the second half of 2017 and the first half of 2018, Zalando, the fashion company with the highest online revenue in the Netherlands, had a desktop bounce rate of 17.8 percent for Zalando.nl. H&M's hm.com, ranked second in Dutch online revenue, had a lower desktop bounce rate: 13.7 percent.
Language barriers and the local presence of Amazon seem to be important drivers for online shopping in Europe. Online shoppers from Ireland, Austria and Belgium, for example, seem more likely to buy products from a foreign e-commerce retailer. Chances are less in Poland and the Netherlands, however, as both countries have a strongly developed domestic e-commerce market.
