Total sales of Tesla Model X cars in the Netherlands 2016-2020

In 2018, Tesla sold nearly 3,000 Model X cars in the Netherlands. However, as of 2019 the American car manufacturer sold only 467 Tesla Model X cars in the country. This significant difference can be explained by the so-called Tesla-Tax that was implemented by the government in early 2019. Electric vehicles with a value of more than 50.000 euros became more expensive to lease, resulting in much higher monthly costs. This tax had an influence on the sales volume of the Tesla Model S as well. In 2019, only 527 Model S cars were sold, which is a significant decrease compared to the previous year when Tesla sold 5,622 cars.

Tesla Model 3: most popular electric passenger car

Even though the “Tesla-tax’’ had its effect on the sales volumes, the Tesla Model S and X remained in the top ten fully electric passenger cars registered in the Netherlands as of September 2020. In total, the Model S (ranked 2nd) had roughly 12,800 registrations, whereas 5,213 Model X (ranked 9th) were registered. The Tesla Model 3, which costs around 50,000 euros, was the leading electric passenger car with 33,255 registrations in 2020.

Netherlands: the highest density of EV charging stations in the world

Charging stations along the road are important for electric vehicles’ drivers to be able to charge their car when traveling. With 19.3 charging stations per 100 kilometers of paved road, the Netherlands had highest density of electric vehicle chargers in the world. China ranked second with 3.5 charging stations per 100 kilometers, which is impressive considering the size of the country and its population.
