Hard seltzer market- Statistics & Facts

Hard seltzer is an alcoholic beverage made from a blend of carbonated water, alcohol, and often some type of fruit flavoring. First released commercially in 2013, the market for hard seltzer has grown considerably in recent years. Although similar to other mixed drinks like hard soda and wine coolers, hard seltzer differentiates itself by being relatively low in calories and sugar. Hard seltzer follows the trend which exists in non-alcoholic beverages of consumers increasingly opting for better-for-you products.

Rising to the top

Although off-premise sales of hard seltzer had already grown substantially in 2019 compared to 2018, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic was not able to curb the beverage's upward trajectory in sales in 2020. Sales of hard seltzer at the beginning of the pandemic were nearly five times greater than the same time in 2019. White Claw was, by far, the leading brand of hard seltzer in the United States in 2020 with sales of nearly two billion U.S. dollars, double that of the next best selling brand, Truly.

Following the better-for-you trend

Increase in sales and consumption of hard seltzer reflects the wider trend of consumers preferring beverages that have positive health claims. The fastest growing segments of liquid refreshment beverages are categories like value-added water and sports and energy drinks. In fact, in a recent survey which asked what steps consumers were taking to avoid or lower their sugar consumption, the number one answer was drinking water instead of caloric beverages. While consumption of most categories of ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages has remained flat (or even declined in the case of sugary flavored malt beverages), hard seltzer has seen rapid adoption.
