The Kvanefjeld mine in Greenland was the zinc project with the highest capital expenditure worldwide as of 2018, amounting to some 1.3 billion U.S. dollars. The U.S. based Hermosa zinc mine was ranked second, reaching 1.24 billion U.S. dollars in the same year.

In 2018, the United States was one of the five leading countries worldwide in terms of zinc mine production, reaching some 790,000 metric tons of this commodity.
