Distribution of Italians reported to live abroad 2019, by continent

Worldwide, the majority of Italians living abroad stayed in a European country. More specifically, 54.3 percent of Italians who left Italy moved to another country in Europe. America represented the second most common area of emigration, where 40.2 percent of expats lived.
In total, 5.3 million Italian people were reported living abroad in 2019, of which 2.9 million stayed in Europe.
Data refer to the Italians reported in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (A.I.R.E.).
