U.S. police: positive community views by community type 2019

According to surveys conducted in 2018 and 2019, U.S. citizens in fragile communities have a more guarded view of the police, with a total of 56 percent of respondents stating they have a positive or very positive view towards their local police. This compares to 82 percent among the general population.

*Survey of 5,784 people from fragile communities in both urban and rural areas via post conducted between July and September 2018. Survey of 2,230 adults to represent the general population conducted online between February 25 and March 6, 2019.
Criteria used to determine fragile communities were unemployment rate, poverty rate, education level and the composite score on an index measuring five interrelated aspects of well-being: sense of purpose, social relationships, financial security, relationship to community and physical health.
Values may not add up to 100 percent due to rounding.
