Number of recorded deaths of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea 2019-2020, by origin

Between January and February 2020, 49 migrants from unknown or mixed origins died in the attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, 16 individuals who died in the Mediterranean Sea originated from the Middle East.
In 2019, 181 North Africans were recorded to have died in the Mediterranean Sea, while further 50 individuals came from Sub-Saharan countries.
The Mediterranean Sea recorded worldwide the largest number of deaths and missing cases of people who migrated. In 2019, 1.3 thousand migrants died by crossing the Central Mediterranean route, registering the highest number of fatalities among the different sea routes.
