In 2018, the southern state of Karnataka in India had the highest number of registered offences related to online identity theft, with more than 5,000 cases registered with the authorities. The country recorded approximately 6,700 cases of online identity theft that year. This category of crime came under the purview of Section 66C of the Indian Penal Code.
