The unemployment rate in Russia has been steadily increasing since April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the beginning of April 2020, the figure stood at 726 thousand unemployed residents registered in employment offices. It increased to nearly 1.7 million unemployed Russians on May 20, 2020.
The introduction of non-working days on the territory of Russia from March 30 to mid-May 2020 in order to combat the spread of a novel coronavirus infection, as well as the continuation of quarantine measures led to a decrease in economic activity.
