Price index of soya beans in South Africa 2001-2019
As of the calendar year 2019, the price index of soya beans in South Africa amounted to 166.5 percent, an increase of 10.8 percent from 2018. Between 2001 and 2019, significant fluctuations can be observed, with an overall increasing trend in the price index of soya beans. The price index increase in 2008 can possibly be linked to the global world food price crisis, along with a domestic consumption which surpassed the production, causing a shortage of soya beans. In 2016, a similar trend can be observed when consumption exceeded the production, therefore affecting the price of soya beans.
