In 2019, the expenditure of inbound tourism in El Salvador increased to nearly 6.2 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), which was the nation's highest share of the decade. That same year, the Latin American country's outbound tourism spending represented two percent of its GDP, slightly up from the 1.9 percent reported for the three prior years. El Salvador's 2019 GDP amounted to about 55.58 billion international dollars, but is expected to drop to 52.89 billion in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
