Number of vaccines administered against COVID-19 in France 2021

On December 27, 2020, France launched its vaccination campaign against the coronavirus epidemic (COVID-19). Mauricette, aged 78, was the first person in France to receive the pandemic vaccine. On January 26, 2021, the number of people who received at least one dose of vaccine amounted to 1,184,510 according to the French Ministry of Health figures.

Vaccines, and the race for herd immunity

The share of a vaccinated population needed to stop the spread of the virus lies at 60 percent, according to scientists. France, like other countries around the world, has announced a vaccination strategy in several stages, giving priority to those at risk and to caregivers. Elderly people are the first group at risk from the virus, as 78 percent of people who died from the virus in France were over 75 years old and they currently occupy 28 percent of the beds in intensive care units.
However, France is far behind other countries, when it comes to the vaccination rate. Neighbors such as Spain and Italy, although less populated, are ahead in the number of doses injected.

Acting as quickly as possible to save the economy

Although the vaccination campaign has been launched, the epidemic continues to spread in France. At the beginning of 2021, France exceeded 60,000 deaths. After a second lockdown set to curb the second wave in November 2020, the French government eased its measures, but a large part of the economy remained closed.
The unemployment rate jumped in the third quarter of 2020 for all age groups. Some sectors such as restaurants, cultural establishments and hotels have had to cease their activity since the implementation of the second containment in early 2020. Aviation, also strongly impacted by the decrease in tourist flows, has seen its economy come to a standstill. In 2020, more than 70 order cancellations occurred at Airbus.
France and other countries have started a long sprint to get out of the crisis as quickly as possible and hope to start the economic recovery as soon as possible.
