Japan: number of financial institutions by type 2024

As of January 2024, there were five city banks in Japan. City banks are among the largest banks in Japan and offer banking services both in Japan and abroad. The leading type of financial institution by number were agricultural cooperatives. Agricultural cooperatives operate in municipalities and are part of the Japan Agriculture (JA) Group. Among other services, they offer financial and insurance services for their members.
