Share of industrial chemical waste disposal in the U.S. 2021, by sector
In 2021, around 29.3 billion pounds of production-related TRI-listed chemical waste were managed in the United States, of which a total of 3.3 billion pounds were disposed of or otherwise released. The metal mining industry accounted for 44 percent of this total, primarily via on-site land disposal. This was followed by the chemical manufacturing industry. Chemicals covered by the U.S. EPA Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program include those that impact both human health and the environment.
