Share of same-sex civil unions in selected regions in Italy 2019
In 2019, 24.5 percent of all same-sex civil unions in Italy were recorded in Lombardy, in the North of the country. Overall, roughly 38 percent of all civil unions took place in the North-Western regions, followed by the regions in the Center. Nationwide, there were 2.3 thousand same-sex unions in 2019. In Italy, same-sex unions have been recognized since June 2016, which guarantee most of the same rights as for married couples.
