Share of microchipped pets in Japan 2023, by type
The majority of pet owners in Japan have not microchipped their pets, according to a survey conducted in February 2023. While 39.1 percent of pet dogs had a microchip implant, only around 20.3 percent of cat owners had a chip injected into their cats.
Since June 2022, implanting microchips in dogs and cats became mandatory for breeders and pet stores in Japan as a measure against a growing stray population.
