EU: maritime transport CO₂ emissions by type 1990-2021

Maritime transportation in the European Union produced a total of 143 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) emissions in 2021. Of this total, 15.7 MtCO₂ were produced by domestic navigation, while 127.6 MtCO₂ were attributable to international navigation. EU shipping emissions increased by 5.6 percent in 2021 from the previous year, rebounding from the COVID-19 induced slump of 2020. Recently, navigation emissions accounted for over 15 percent of total transportation emissions in the EU.
