CO₂ emissions from transportation in the EU 1990-2020

The European Union's transportation sector released 767.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) in 2020. This was a decline of nearly 20 percent in comparison to the previous year, which was mainly due to the mobility restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, when compared to 1990 levels, this figure still represented an increase of around 7.5 percent. Transportation is the second-largest source of emissions in the European Union, behind only the energy supply sector.
