Banks held the majority of U.S. commercial real estate mortgage debt in the fourth quarter of 2022. Category I banks, which are global systemically important bank holding companies, only accounted for 0.28 trillion U.S. dollars of the 2.17 trillion U.S. dollars worth of debt held by banks, while category II-IV banks reported 0.34 trillion U.S. dollars. Smaller domestic and foreign banking organizations with assets between 50 and 100 billion U.S. dollars had the highest exposure to commercial properties, with holdings totaling 1.55 trillion U.S. dollars.
