Global capacity distribution of planned coal mines as of 2021, by type

The vast majority of the planned coal mines in the world are thermal coal mines, accounting for a capacity of 71 percent as of January 2021. Thermal coal mines produce coal intended for power plants. By comparison, metallurgical coal mines accounted for a 20 percent share of the total capacity of planned coal mines at that time.
