Proposed GHG emission reduction targets for shipping in the EU 2025-2050

To decarbonize the EU's maritime transportation sector, improved efficiency and increased sustainable fuel use adoption will be needed across the entire sector. As part of the European Commission's 'Fit for 55' package, new regulations propose limiting the greenhouse gas emission intensity of energy onboard ships over the coming decades. By 2025, the yearly GHG emission intensity of energy for ships will need to be reduced by two percent, relative to 2020 levels. By 2030, this would increase to six percent, and to 75 percent by 2050.

Currently, maritime transportation accounts for roughly 14 percent of EU transportation sector greenhouse gas emissions. The Fit for 55 package aims to reduce EU greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
