Japan: smoking situation in food establishments

The majority of food service establishments in Japan banned smoking in all indoor areas as revealed in a survey conducted between January and February 2021. More than 62 percent of responding businesses stated that they did not allow smoking inside their stores, whereas only close to seven percent of food establishments installed dedicated smoking rooms inside their premises.
The Japanese government requested food establishments, among others, to make an effort to reduce secondhand smoking, with the amendments to the Health Promotion Act stipulating tighter restrictions and bans on smoking in public.
