In 2023, holiday retail sales in the United States were estimated to reach approximately 965 billion U.S. dollars. With a projected return rate of 15.4 percent of total sales, nearly 150 billion U.S. dollars' worth of merchandise was expected to be returned to U.S. retailers. Finally, of this amount, an estimated 16.5 percent (or 24.5 billion U.S. dollars) was expected to comprise fraudulent and abusive returns.
