In 2023, approximately half of surveyed leading retailers in the United States said they had experienced wardrobing. Wardrobing is a type of return fraud, in which consumers will buy a usable item (e.g. an expensive piece of clothing) with the intention of returning it (immediately) after use. Ranking second, shoppers trying to return shoplifted or stolen merchandise was the second most common type of return fraud experienced by U.S. retailers.
